The Basics Of Speed Reading

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Here are some important tips that teach you the most basic tactics and routes to successful speed reading. First and foremost, reduce noise and other distractions. Some might benefit from listening to music at a low sound level, but having someone in the room with you that is constantly talking to you or on the phone makes speed reading virtually impossible for any person. So, the first thing you have to do on the road to being able to successfully perform speed reading is remove any distracting noise. Close the windows, the radio, the television set, ask anyone that is in the room with you to be really quiet or find yourself one room in the house where you cannot be distracted.

The next step after providing a quiet environment is to make yourself as comfortable as you possibly can. Not comfortable like you are sitting in bed on Sunday morning because this would be really unproductive, but comfortable in the sense that you do not need to go to the bathroom, you do not need a drink or food, and so on. Make sure that you are sitting comfortably. It is best that, during speed reading, you sit upright on a chair or on an arm chair and not lying down.

After you are sitting down, look around the room to see anything else that might push you off balance. Are any light sources aimed directly at your eyes or at your reading material? If so, then fix it because this always leads to your eyes getting tired. If we are speaking ‘tired’ then it is worth saying that being refreshed and completely awake is very important, so if you are not fully awake then go outside for a walk first and get a coup or two of coffee. If you are feeling even a bit hungry, then eat before you get started and not during the breaks because you will need those breaks to stay refreshed.

In terms of breaks, I will say that it is best that you get a five minute break for every half an hour of speed reading or ten minutes of break for every hour of speed reading. If you do not respect this tip you will most likely lose your concentration, and if that happens you might as well call it a day and go outside. The scope of speed reading is to acquire a lot of information in the shortest time possible without reading all the text. If you are very tired or simply cannot concentrate properly you will not be able to remember everything to the letter, as you should, and your speed reading session will have been compromised. Follow this basic tips in order to get a first feeling for speed reading, and after you will try it out you can learn about other important speed reading tips and tricks.
